He joined the army and was sent for training as a private to Camp Custer, Michigan, early in 1917. Later he was made a sergeant and went to France as a member of the Three Hundred and Fortieth Infantry. He was sent to an officers' training school at Langres, France, and was commissioned second lieutenant. "
