The Thrill of the Discovery

Captured in the photo above, is Miles McNair's Furniture and Undertaking store from the 1880's. It is the first photo I have come across documenting his business on Exchange Square. I had previously discovered a newspaper mention of his installing new sidewalks in 1885.

Miles was a Speculator and Commercial Traveller. This furniture store is unique as it is the only business he owned outright, as he mostly invested in other local small businesses such as The Norwegian Plow Co. He was also well known for the residential properties he built in Brodhead, founding Greenwood Cemetery, and The McNair Block.

National Hall is also located on this block. In the 1880's, it housed a roller rink.
